Summer vacations give families a chance to relax, spend time together, and create lasting memories. With its mix of cultural, entertainment, and leisure offers for Mom and Dad, and museums, amusement parks, and attractions for kids, Shanghai is the perfect place to take a fun and meaningful family vacation.
Although Shanghai is best known for its ornate Bund buildings, world-famous skyscrapers, and lavish five-star restaurants, it also offers a host of unique family activities that blend education and fun for the perfect family experience.
Four Seasons Hotel Pudong, Shanghai recommends the following:
See Wild Animals Up Close: Shanghai Wild Animal Park
One of China’s most unique zoos, the Shanghai Wild Animal Park eschews cages to let visitors see wild animals living in spaces designed to resemble their natural habitats. The star attraction – a thrilling safari ride through a reserve in which lions, tigers and giraffes roam freely – lets visitors watch these magnificent animals hunt, live and interact as they would in the wild.
Less adventurous family members can stroll between the park’s enclosures and meet some of China’s most beloved animals, such as the giant panda, golden monkey, South China tiger, and liger, a cross between a lion and a tiger. Families can also feed, pet, and even take selfies with some of the animals. It’s a wonderful way for kids to learn how these creatures live in the wild and what we can do to protect them.
Ticket price: CNY 130
Opening hours: 8:00 am – 6:00 pm
Tease Your Brain: Shanghai Science and Technology Museum
Ever wondered what causes earthquakes? How lasers work? What DNA does? Families can find the answers to these questions and more at one of Shanghai’s most engaging educational museums, the Science and Technology Museum. Kids can explore a wide range of science topics, from robots to physics and outer space in fun, interactive exhibits that might even teach their parents a thing or two.
Everyone can learn how blood moves through the human body, have a robot sketch their portrait, and catch a 3D IMAX movie. With four floors housing a mix of permanent and visiting exhibits and special presentations, demonstrations and events, parents might walk out with a future scientist.
Ticket price: CNY 60
Opening hours: 9:00 am – 5:15 pm
Get Lost in a World of Chocolate: Chocolate Happy Land
Once everyone is done learning, go see what the world would look like if it were made out of chocolate. At Chocolate Happy Land, visitors find life-size classic cars, shoes, perfume bottles, Terracotta Warriors, and even a replica of the Forbidden City, all made out of chocolate.
If ogling all those masterpieces makes one’s stomach rumble, adults and children can put on chef’s hats and bake their own chocolate, cookies and cotton candy. Best of all, everyone gets to eat everything they make.
